Story Painting, a Fine Balance, and a New Threshold

A fictional story, whether it's long or short, is supposed to be something that influences our own views in life. It's supposed to expose us to new perspectives, introduce us to new lifestyles, and bring us into experiences that we may never have, but still enjoy as a silent bystander. And it's supposed to do those things in such a way that upon reading a story, we feel as though we've mentally transported to another time and place, made new friends or enemies, and perhaps become a bit wiser from it all.

Such a feat requires not only sufficient writing skill, but also an imagination that can build worlds and lure readers with every juicy detail. It's called, "story painting" or "painting with words." And let me tell you, it ain't easy, especially for non-fiction writers like myself.
